>>Allison Hirth, Reporter: LEARNING A NEW LANGUAGE, WHETHER IT’S VERBAL OR VISUAL, TAKES PRACTICE. AND THESE STUDENTS, KNOWN AS SILENT RAIDERS, RECOGNIZE THAT COMMITMENT.>>Dane Hoogendam, President, Silent Raiders: Silent Raiders is a student-led organization that
focuses on helping students understand and learn ASL.>>Hirth: DANE HOOGENDAM IS PRESIDENT OF SILENT RAIDERS. HE SAYS THE AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE CLUB WANTS TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF DEAF CULTURE WHILE PROMOTING ASL STUDENT INVOLVEMENT.>>Hoogendam: You can understand a language, but to actually, like, be fluent in it, you got to
use it, and so, that’s how we help bridge the gap is through events and coming out and just meeting everybody.>>Hirth: THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, THE GROUP HOSTS SEVERAL EVENTS LIKE SPEED SIGNING AND SILENT DINNERS. THEY ALSO PUT THEIR SIGNING SKILLS ON DISPLAY DURING CAROL OF LIGHTS.>>Hoogendam: We interpret the songs during Carol of Lights, so, you know, all of the Christmas songs, the classic Christmas
songs, we interpret those songs, and we sign them over here, right in front of
the Science building.>>Hirth: HOOGENDAM SAYS LEARNING TO SIGN THOSE SONGS TAKES TIME.>>Hoogendam: It does. It takes a couple months of preparation, it’s really
just practice. It’s just practice, making sure you understand the songs and, like,
practicing just going over the songs a lot. We’ll have meetings and we’ll practice to
make sure everyone understands, you know, the signs, what they need to work on, just,
do it with music, without music, to really, you know, see where we can do better in
the interpreting.>>Hirth: THE 61ST ANNUAL CAROL OF LIGHTS WILL BE THE SECOND YEAR HOOGENDAM, WHO’S HARD-OF-HEARING HIMSELF, SIGNS ON THIS STAGE.>>Hoogendam: Deaf people have just as much right to understand those songs as anybody else, right? So, this is
just a way to help do it in their language.>>Hirth: IT’S A SERVICE THE SILENT RAIDERS ARE HAPPY TO PROVIDE TO ENSURE EVERYONE WHO COMES TO CAMPUS FOR CAROL OF LIGHTS CAN FULLY EXPERIENCE THE TIMELESS TRADITION.>>Hoogendam: Everyone quiets down, it gets really, really dark on campus, and then all of a sudden they do the countdown and the lights just flash on, like, beautiful seeing how the colors just
light up and everyone cheers and that’s definitely my favorite part.
