I feel like I always wanted to be a social worker, but I didn’t know. I switched careers twice, and then I learned about that there’s this pretty cool profession that let’s you help people and they also pay you to do it. Social workers are the ones that come in, they see families and clients in the worst situations and they are genuinely there to help, to bring comfort. companionship, and they are the ones that can change people’s lives. There’s not one specific thing that you need to focus on when you’re exploring the social work major. You can try anything that you want to coming in. Learning what social work is, what comes with social work, and the different demographics that you can work with. And just the fact that it’s not focused in just one area. I think it’s a very diverse degree. You can do anything with it. The good thing about it is you can start working with one population and you might end up working with another population. You don’t have to spend your whole life in school and you can make a difference. And have a meaningful career and life. What made me want to be a social worker was a personal experience I had with a social worker in the past. And it was nice to have someone unrelated to me and who didn’t know people I know and didn’t know my situation on a personal level, give me guidance and give me words of affirmation. She really instilled in me that I had it in me to overcome these on my own. I decided to go into social work because my background is actually in psychology. And I love psychology, but I feel like social work is just more one on one with a client. It’s more getting to know your clients and your community … it’s just, it’s more meaningful to me to be a social worker.
