This is my husband Nick Geller, I’m Michelle Geller and this is our son Desmond Geller. Back in November he was diagnosed with leukemia… and… it’s a particularly rare and high‐risk leukemia that he has. so, um… …he will have to have a bone marrow transplant
next month. We got the phone call from the doctor and she said, your daughter has leukemia and you need to go straight to the children’s hospital, there is already a room waiting for you. We got the news that our unborn son, our fourth child, had a very rare and complex congenital heart defect. And, at that moment, we were told that it would require multiple surgeries for him to survive. A child’s serious health issue can be devastating
to families. Suddenly, priorities shift, plans change,
and lives are drastically altered in ways no one could have anticipated. This is when the San Diego Ronald McDonald
House steps in to help, providing a “home away from home” for
families with a child in medical crisis. So many people don’t really know what the
Ronald McDonald House is, and it’s so important for them to find out, because we are serving
the families in the community. Whether it be that their child’s sick and
they’re in need a place to stay for an extended period of time, whether it is that they need
to get away from the hospital while their child’s going through a procedure. They need a fresh meal, they need a shower,
they need to get their clothes laundered. I mean, there are so many things that the
Ronald McDonald House will do and help families. This incredible organization started out as a 12-room house just down the road from where we are today. And today, we’re in a 47-room House
…65 thousand square-foot facility, full of wonderful, wonderful people taking care of families. Having the Ronald McDonald House there and having such wonderful people there to help us has made a huge impact on this whole process. Knowing that I was across the street, or my
husband was across the street and that at any moment could come over if necessary, that
was huge. We could be by his side in a matter of minutes. You know, I have been in the nonprofit business
for quite a while, but I have to tell you it’s pretty extraordinary here at this house
in a number of respects, because people give and give all the time. There is an old phrase that, “this is a
house that love built”, and I think that’s probably a pretty fair description about what we do here. …try to find the love we can all share, for folks who are having a really tough time…. so that when they leave us, they are together as a family for the rest of their lives. McDonald’s provides a steady base of support
as our founding partner. Yet compassionate gifts from generous people
like you are vital… taking families from fear and isolation to togetherness and hope. The Ronald McDonald House, especially the staff there, have just played such a huge part in helping us get through this.
