Meet Nyasha – Social Work Major at Salisbury University

NYASHA: Salisbury
University’s social work program is very diverse. It is a pretty
small-knit community, so I’ve gotten to
better relation with a lot of my professors. Some I’ve had every
semester, know them by name, knows something about me. Just knowing that I have
somebody who personally knows me makes me more
inclined to do better. I’m more motivated,
kind of like a mom here on the eastern shore. All of my professors
are very dedicated. They’re all passionate about
social work and the students as a whole, and that’s
a great thing to feel. I have always been that mom,
that friend that everyone came to to get those late-night,
my-life-is-falling-apart calls, so if I was that friend
who got the calls for free, why not make that
call profitable. I’ve always enjoyed
helping people. I ideally want to
work with youth, so being a guidance
counselor or just working like a big
brother, big sister agency. Just making sure
that students, youth, children have somebody
in their corner. One of the beautiful things
about the social program here at Salisbury University
is they provide you internship and
clinical experiences based on your interests. So me expressing a desire
to be in a school setting, they placed me right
there, and I feel it couldn’t be a better pick. The best thing I possibly
learned from the problem is self-care. It is something really
small and minute, but it’s probably one of the
most important thing just knowing that you’re going
to take on a lot of things. But it’s important to make sure
that you preserve yourself. It’s not just something
for social work, but it’s a life lesson. I think that’s another amazing
thing about social program is they don’t just teach you
about the program and about the profession, they teach
things about yourself. And I definitely feel like
I’ve grown as a person by simply being in the program. So I am very grateful
for that opportunity.
