Meet Maura – Master of Social Work Student at Salisbury University

I always knew that I
wanted to help people, and it took a little while
to figure out exactly how I wanted to do that. I reflected on some instances
that happened in my life. I lost my aunt on
September 11th, and social workers played
a huge role in helping us, kind of, grow and
heal from that event. And I, kind of, really
wanted to pay that forward. So I was last stationed
in Dover, Delaware, and I met a social worker
who was also a veteran, and he was the one who told me
about their satellite programs. I saw that Salisbury
played such a role in, kind of, reaching out to
all of Maryland, including the rural areas. And I felt like this
was a program for me. I have always been
a distance learner, and although their
courses are hybrid, which is considered
distance, I’ve always felt like I was
a Salisbury student. The master of social work
staff has always felt– they’ve reached out
and made us feel really connected to main
campus, even though we lived and learned so far away. So I’ve had two
field placements. My first was in
oncology social work, and currently I am doing
outpatient mental health. I’m really honing my
skills, so the things that I learned in the
classroom and we talk about– and I think our professors
do a fabulous job at it and really incorporating
their experiences into the coursework, so
we can understand it. But once I go into
the field, I’m actually implementing those
skills and those theories, and it just clicks
and it’s amazing. I have gotten compliments on
mine and my fellow classmates level of insight
and self-awareness, which I think is sometimes
forgotten about when we’re focusing on academics. We’re not always thinking
about what comes up when we’re thinking
about these things, and what we’re working on. It does challenge us to look
inside ourselves and see the things that
we’re dealing with and how that might affect the
clients that we work with. The best part about being a
master of social work student is knowing that what I’m
doing and what I’m learning, I’m going to be able
to help people with. I’m getting real skills
and real knowledge that I’m going to be able
to put forth into this world and make our community
better and stronger.
