The first thing we can do to make Canada a
safer place is to ban the sale of handguns. The only purpose of handguns is to kill people
– they should be illegal, and that shouldn’t be a difficult decision for parliament to
make. Secondly, we need to do something about hate
speech and hate groups. Hate speech is illegal in Canada but it’s
very laxly enforced and we should insist that police forces across the country should enforce
hate speech laws whether hate speech comes from an election platform for example, such
as the People’s Party of Canada or whether it comes from organizations which are posting
racial white supremacy pamphlets etcetera. We want hate groups to be identified as criminal
organizations as subject to criminal legislation. This should not be a difficult thing for parliament
to do and it would ensure that minority groups identifiable groups or the targets of hate
groups and hate speech are protected. This is something that is parliament’s responsibility. We also want to address the root causes of
racism and hatred and some of these are economic and some are social. So we know that high unemployment levels,
poor living standards and very right wing politics contribute to the growth of hate
speech and hate groups.
