Good afternoon everyone welcome to getting started with TD Ameritrade today my friends we are talking about education so have you ever wanted to do you know more about how to invest about perhaps how to trade stocks options perhaps even futures but you don’t know where to get started and you’d love to know where are. All right. I can speak honestly I can’t where all of the resources are well if that’s what you’re looking for you’re in for a treat stick around we’ve got lots of great education to show you today. Okay so to date not quite the thirty first of October and not quite the end of the year and yet we have a blizzard happening here in Salt Lake City so it feels like we’re skipping pretty quickly through fall but- my name is Barbara Armstrong I’m delighted to be your coach this afternoon. As you can see here I have a Twitter handle be Armstrong underscore TDA would love to have you follow me on Twitter let’s get through our important disclosures and then we can get right over to the education tab. Okay I have we are going to go into great detail on any particular trading strategy today but know that options are not suitable for all investors. As there are special risks inherent to options trading that may expose investors to potentially rapid and substantial losses. You may want to grab and read a copy of the characteristics and risks of standardized options before you get started also know that in order to demonstrate the functionality of the platform. We often use actual symbols but that’s not to be construed as a recommendation on the part of TD Ameritrade or myself we cannot begin to know what’s appropriate for you in your account. So any investment decision you make in your self directed account is solely or your responsibility. Education content is provided for illustrative and educational use only. Not a recommendation or solicitation to purchase sell or hold any specific security or utilize any particular strategy. Please no as I’m sure you do that all investing involves risk including the risk of loss. Okay I. Because sometimes it yeah we get talking to people in this field hand and the language of investing it’s like a language unto itself in a lot of people have been in this industry for decades and decades by came to TD Ameritrade in two thousand and eleven as a client much like you perhaps have and the reason I decided to become a client at TD Ameritrade was that I had heard that they had this world class education and having lived through two thousand and eight nine and been in. An investor in the market for many many years I wanted to have a better understanding of how to best invest my assets when the market was going sideways and what mark was pulling back it is pulling back as a mild term for what happened. In two thousand and eight nine. So I then. Participating in this education and have now- joined back in two thousand and sixteen TD Ameritrade as a coach and I believe in education to my absolute very core and I’m delighted to be sharing some of what we can offer here with you for those of you were here with me live today please feel free to type a greeting into the chat not only to me but to each other let us know where you’re tuning in from. I hope this guys- near where you happen to be today. And if you have any questions as we go along. On any of our education please don’t hesitate to ask and I will be more than happy to answer any questions that you might have. I’ve designed this class which is really an overview of the TD Ameritrade. Dot com platform to be taught in about a nine week rotation and work. On week to hear these are all archives if you’re saying. Income estimator tab I’ve heard that that can show me. You know how much dividend income might be generated in my account potentially. I’d be interested in that- it’s four weeks away well you can put it in your calendar to listen. You know four weeks from now you could also go back and listen to it in the archive. And these are all archived as well so it’s amazing really how much. Information is available on this platform and the more you look around. I mean you can do. It it time flies by let me put it to you that way when you start really. Seeing how much is available on this platform but really one of the things that I like that it is that. You do have to spend a lot of time we bring you get to what you need pretty quickly. So today our session our active. I understand. What what education is offered by TD Ameritrade and what might find it. And then. When you have a little bit of a conversation about how you might choose to design a path or curriculum for yourself so hello to Steve and to add. Coming in from studies. In Florida sure rub my nose in it. Actually I miss gear so I don’t mind the snow but it is only October folks so you know we’re a little early for me to be embracing the white stop. So yeah so we’re going to look at the education tab we’re going to go through how education is offered on this platform. How you can access the various types and then look at what you might want to do next with this. I’m so we’ve got courses we’ve got videos we’ve got webcasts that you can both attend live and then you can participate in the chat like this one. You have both the opportunity to join me live at five o’clock eastern on Tuesdays as we record these. And if worker life don’t permit then when they’re archived you can go back and you can listen to the recording so. You know you can have it both ways and sometimes people will join a webcast. Especially if there’s a lot of information covered in a short period of time. They’ll watch it live and then they’ll go back in and watch the recording again. I’m in the beginning. It’s a bit like drinking out of a fire hose my friends so. Don’t think that you are alone if you’re feeling a little overwhelmed when you first get started. Diving into this world of stock investing- options investing. There’s a lot to this and I’ve been in this now well I started in two thousand and eleven it’s now two thousand and nineteen. Eight years in and still learning new things every day and yet you don’t need to know everything. To be able to make sound decisions with respect to your portfolio or to be able to know enough to have a. More informed conversation with the person that. Is helping you with your accounts. Okay so let’s come over to the TD Ameritrade platform. I’ve already signed in here and if we come to the education tab. We say well where might one start. So I actually started by going to a two day event because there was one that was in my community I was living in Michigan at the time- but if you don’t have. One that’s going to be in your backyard as I had. Let me come over here. You might want to start with looking at stocks because even if you’re saying Hey I’m younger I don’t have a large portfolio to trade so I think I’d be better to start with options the thing is if you were trading an option it’s on something you are buying a call on a stock we’re selling a put you know on apple on Facebook on Exxon Mobil on a company and so it’s important that you understand. How those stocks or companies whose stocks you are buying how the stocks might move and how that might impact an option trade so even if you’re interested in options stocks are a great place to start- because that’s kind of the fat. So if we were we click on stocks. From the education tab we can see there’s a four minute video here that just gives you an overview of the basics so not a big time investment- if we come down here past the three courses you can also see that we have. This introduction to stocks. It is five videos. A total time of twenty two minutes for five videos that would be a great overview and then here we’ve got some stuff on fundamental analysis and now other five videos basic stock strategies. Twenty one minutes. How to manage risk for videos. Sixteen minutes managing risk with stocks. You know so this might be a great way to wet your whistle if you’re brand spanking new to all of this you know- you know my expression is don’t know a stock from a rock and I know that most people know what is Starkey is in and they know what it is to own stock in a company- but if you’re at the beginning of the curve as all I was- starting with these videos. I found helpful and then I went. And this was just my journey and that’s not to say that this is the best. Journey for everyone. But I started with this stocks technical analysis class because- I wanted to be able to identify true rand. Because I wanted to be able to identify the warning signs if the market or a particular stock was going to. Perhaps move from being in an uptrend to a downtrend and to be able to protect myself differently- and so this trend support and resistance and price patterns. And you know they’re saying this course is about a four hour commitment but I can tell you that it’s organized by chapter they’re a little quiz is at the end of every chapter. And there are videos and bad it and you can do it a section at a time. And you know they just kind of at the end of each section. Yeah introducing technical analysis here are some of the basics how to read a chart how to identify a trend. How do you see trends with supply and demand something called support and resistance. And if these are new two year terms for you- you know this would be an interesting place to perhaps start also if you come in you look in the resources tab. There are some sample investing plans and you know when I say if you are going to bake a cake for example a lot of people will go out and they will either go to their laptops. And they’ll look up a recipe or they’ll go to a cookbook or they’ll pull out the recipe card from their recipe card holder and they’ll follow a recipe if they want that cake could turn out successfully. Similarly when it comes to investing whether it’s futures are stocks or options a lot of people will develop a set of recipe cards if you will or sample investing or trading plans. To got them in how to trade successfully and so we have some examples to get you started here with the courses as well. So you lot watch some of the videos you’ve gotten through course now what. Well. This was one of my. Favorite things that maybe we shouldn’t have favorites and maybe I shouldn’t be saying this but I loved the webcasts and what’s a webcast well you’re in a webcast now. And so it’s any in it our culture an instructor that is sitting there with you and you are dialing in from the comfort of your home or wherever you may be I mean I had a- friend who used to get to work early and she wanted to be able to be on the webcast line so. Live so she would sit in her car with her laptop. And participated in some of these trading rooms- before she went into the office so we have over forty webcasts taught each and every week. And at eleven o’clock eastern every day and I’d encourage you I’ve there’s three tabs here there’s upcoming webcasts. There’s the archives. And then there’s this webcast calendar which is the one that I have up right now I would encourage you to go in on a Sunday night or early Monday because this rotate so we can see now we’re on Tuesday. This and as we go through the day these classes drop off it’s not that we haven’t tried anything yet today. It’s just that they drop off is there taught for some reason that’s how this. Is calibrated now that will change at some point in the future but that’s how it’s running right now. So after you do that course you may want to tap into Connie hill’s getting started with stock investing. On Thursday mornings it’s a half hour class the basics of. Stock investing. On Mondays. Cameron may. Great guy an awesome coach he does a class called getting started with technical analysis and charting essentials it’s all about how stocks move and how to identify. These patterns that might give us an idea on whether a stock might be continuing to go up. Or whether it maybe in a channel going sideways or if it might might be moving to the downside if you’re interested in options and you’ve already done some of the stock stuff- I teach a getting started with options on Friday morning. And then Tuesday morning which has fallen off the calendar and will re appear tomorrow is getting started with futures. So we’ve got all these getting started classes also on Monday afternoon. There’s managing a self directed portfolio. And on Monday evenings you know if I scroll down. You can see that there’s one on if you’re interested in dividend income. You know generating income with dividend stocks which is currently being taught at seven o’clock on Monday evenings. Generating income with dividend stocks and then I do a class on real estate investment trust on Tuesdays which is another class on you know generating income. And the first Monday of the month we talk about bond ETFs as well now is there more than just beginner material absolutely. I mean on Wednesdays John McNichol teaches a class on vertical spreads- Ken rose teaches a class on advanced options strategies on Thursdays there is on Fridays- Pat Mulally teaches a class on advanced charting techniques so I mean that there’s stuff that started at beginner level. Or an introductory level an intermediate level and the advanced level so if you wanted to come back and say OK. Is she mentioned that class on. Income investing where she mentioned and we’ll come down here and we’ll put my name into just bring up the getting started with TD Ameritrade she mentioned that income estimator tab which was how to figure out how much your account is generating in and dividends or if I put together a portfolio and wanted to generate dividend income so if I come over here to the archives. Then say well barb said that she teaches this class I’m going to put in barb’s name. And then I’m just going to start scrolling back so we can see getting started with TD Ameritrade. The last one was planning and retirement goals. And that was how to find stocks using a screener search Hey. How to place a trade now that’s not the one I’m looking for. And you can just keep. Scrolling down. Until you find the one that you want. Getting started. Here plan future dividends with the income estimator have you ever wondered just how much income dividends are adding to your account on a monthly or annual basis here’s a handy tool that’s the one I wanted. And then you can just click it and watch. Pretty simple okay another. Educational opportunity for you is in person events and this was another thing that I loved and would highly recommend I still love attending these things every chance I get the first one if you’re brand new is called investing fundamentals and that would be a great place to start the you know it’s learn the basics of investing so you can help build your confidence as an advance as an investor. Learn how to identify ghouls eccentric cetera the next one is in Orlando November eighth and ninth. And you know there was a two day event in Michigan when I first joined and then there wasn’t anything in Michigan for several years and I wouldn’t. I didn’t hesitate if there was a class on options I wanted to attend and it was in Chicago I would get in my car and drive that four hours to go to Chicago or if there was a class on technical analysis like is coming up in the Chicago area November fifteenth. And then it’s a two day workshop actually one days technical analysis the next day’s options. These are free to attend. And if I could get a cheap flight over to DC- to do a two day event the thing that. Some investors find really helpful about these is that all the day to day distractions that pull your focus are gone in you’re just in a room with world class instructors. And a bunch of other like minded people who like you want to learn and take control of their financial destiny and figure this stuff out. And so you know you can sign up it’s free to register just let us know so we know how many people to set for how many people to order coffee and snacks for- and then when you get there come early. Get a seat at the front of the room- you’ll be glad you did you’ll save so glad bar mentioned that to come down early and- you know make sure I had a seat picked out close to the front it’s- fantastic. So we’ve got two day events there are webcasts there are courses. So sorry we’ve got webcasts in person events we’ve got if you come over here we’ve got the courses and we’ve got videos and then there’s also the TD Ameritrade network which. Is a hold we only in separate company in and of itself but that a lot of day to day news you can use. So you may want to tap into that as well the other thing I wanted to mention about the webcasts is that for some people what they find very very helpful is that the webcasts it especially if you can tap into them live. You’re trying to figure out. How to sell covered calls and there’s a class just on covered calls and cash secured puts. You can go into the market live with it and it’s an instructor who’s going to place example trades that you can then mimic. In your paper money to get the hang up here’s how the platform works here are some of the guidelines or rules I might want to consider in creating my own. Recipe or trading guideline if you will for this covered call strategy. And then you know they come back every week you have the same instructor from week to week and they show you not only. You know when some investors might consider placing this type of trade but then they’ll show you how to manage it once you’re in which is really important also- and so this is something that’s really powerful. About these live webcast is that it’s real life wife application. So enough on that and then once you’ve gone through stocks you can go to options their stuff on bonds their stuff on exchange traded funds there’s education on futures on forex- you know there’s there are all kinds of tool demos. How to place a trade how to place a stop loss order how to set up your thinkorswim platform. No tons of little tools levels here- and then portfolio management there’s another thing that and this will be the last thing I point out as we wrap up today- but if you come click on planning and retirement. And then if we just click on retirement here. And I know there’s lately and other place that we can see the S. let’s say we click on nearing retirement. I don’t know why that came up. Because that was checklist we didn’t want the checklist. So one of the things you’ll see you go to any of the sections is. And I’m sure there are other ways to get to these ticker tape articles but this is one. So you could click on this TD Ameritrade ticker tape retirement articles and it’ll get you into. The ticker tape arena. Come to mama. I don’t know why that is not. Okay let’s try again. We’ll go to arriving. We’ll just see maybe this link is temporarily down OK so let’s go to the ticker tape. TD Ameritrade. Okay so here is the ticker tape platform and out I apologize I’m not quite sure why this link is down but you might. Want to put in something on stock investing. And it will bring up all kinds of articles on stock investing in I have read a lot of these and- they’re fantastic basics of investing in stocks what is a stock. A five minute read you know under investing basics what’s the stock exchange just understanding. The stock exchange three minutes. Let me just scroll down a bit here. Goal planning. Our five signs a stock might not be a good bye doesn’t that sound interesting. Five minute read. Socially aware portfolios. A lot of people now are looking to buy from companies that have certification saying that they are socially conscious companies and that they’ve gone through what is needed to get them there are perhaps you’re pretty savvy stock investor and you know a lot about that but the world at futures is a whole New World. And so you could type in futures or futures basics. You know and again tons of information fine with futures basics of futures contracts and futures trading five minute read- trying out futures options here the key differences between futures options and- options on equities- the here’s what is a future anyway one minute read. So tons of information so you can just come up here and take type the interpretative- dot TD Ameritrade dot com where you can access it from the page typically. Okay so guys that’s a wrap I don’t see any questions in the chart- again thanks to ed and Steve for contributing to our chat today so what we really look at is the education tab- I hope that you have found this informative in that you may have learned a little something new today even if you have been perusing the website. I clicked on some of those links today and I was really impressed with the number of short tutoriales we have up on how to use the thinkorswim platform for example and don’t think because you clicked on a link one time that you already know everything that’s behind their this is an organic website. It is being worked on added to an re find all the time so keep coming back and if there’s something you’d really like to see that there or that you can’t fall and call the one eight hundred. Not. They’ll either help you find it or make a note of what you’re looking for so that we can help create it. To serve you better- this so I. You know again our goal was to become more familiar with our educational. Offerings today and hopefully we don’t exactly that we’ve looked at where the courses are. The videos the webcasts the in person events we also are now offering a lot of events rate inside your branches. And there are there’s lots of stuff being developed lots of stuff already there and those are happening across the country. Probably six to ten or twelve of those. Each and every each and every week actually there’s probably a couple of dozen because when we’re doing one there might be ten branches participating and that- so call your local branch TD Ameritrade batch and ask them if they have an event coming up them. And what the topic is in and get on the list and you can actually access that information from the website also- so guys that’s a wrap for today I appreciate you being with me- keep in mind as always that all investing involves risk. We didn’t look at a lot of symbols per se today but know that- in order to demonstrate the functionality of the platform we always do but that’s never to be construed as a recommendation. On the part of TD Ameritrade or myself we cannot begin to know what suitable for each and everyone of you so any investment decision you taking your self directed account is your responsibility.
