Collaboration and community at DataJam 2019

DataJam is all about bringing a bunch of people from across government and the third sector
and the private sector together to talk about how we can use data and service
design to solve real problems that are affecting
real people in our region, the north-east. It’s really great to hear product people
and service people talk about data. So we are bringing together people to have
the right types of conversations and this event really fills a need in itself and hopefully will get the same kind of outcomes
that we did from the last one. Data and service design are integral parts
of the puzzle really to making good services. If you don’t have the the data you don’t
know whether you are impacting change or whether your services is successful or not. There’s a lot of passion and a lot of enthusiasm
and bringing those ideas and that knowledge together in one place is really exciting. Data jam has been awesome fun. I’ve met lots of different people it’s
really interesting to hear how different people are using data, how they do their their analysis so it’s
really helpful for the Observatory. I have attended the unconference sessions,
I have attended the hack sessions and it’s been amazing. We’ve been working on skills for young people
and how they can map it with location. The team needed a power BI developer, it was
good to put my skills into good use. It’s a wonderful opportunity to have
everybody here from so many different places working on so many different problems and taking it forward means that it’s not
just a couple of days away from the office is actually changing how people work. It’s getting to people to think about things
in a slightly different way. It’s helped us think about some uses of
the sensors we already have, how we can use them to help achieve some of
the outcomes that the people have been talking about in the room. I’m really excited about that because it’s
a whole different slant on the city that we currently don’t have. It’s amazing how people can come together
for common good irrespective of their job description, it’s something I going take out from here
and I’m going to run with it forever. We’ve had the same energy I think that we
had last year which is really great, we kept that momentum going. I think one of the things we are saying is
that DataJam is a community, not an event. The work that we’ve taken and the foundations
we put in place from the hacks are definitely things we are going to be able
to take forward. DWP can’t solve all of the different problems
that our users have on our own. By working closely with all the partner organisations
that we deal with the only way we are really going to get to
the right come outcomes for our users. DataJam will help us do that.
