Dr. Marion Nestle

As the voice and conscience of the national food movement, Dr. Marion Nestle has worked tirelessly to improve school lunches, educate on the health dangers of processed foods, lobby against the marketing of processed foods to children, and rally against the industrialized food system.

Dr. Nestle will speak from 6-7:30 at The People’s Banquet on Friday, Oct. 10, at the Center for the Arts. Dr. Nestle’s talk is free; tickets are available in the St. John’s Medical Center Wellness Department (555 E. Broadway).

Tickets for The People’s Banquet, an all-you-can-eat extravaganza of locally sourced dishes created by Jackson Hole’s finest chefs, are $40, and available here. The People’s Banquet begins at the conclusion of Dr. Nestle’s talk and runs from 7:30–10:00.

Nestle’s landmark book Food Politics, which was just rereleased in its tenth anniversary edition, was the first work to put the words food and politics together. She is the Paulette Goddard Professor of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health at New York University, professor of Sociology at NYU and visiting professor of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University. She is chair of the Council on Nutrition Policy of the National Association for Public Health Policy. Her research examines scientific and socioeconomic influences on food choice, obesity, and food safety, emphasizing the role of food marketing. She is the author of eight books, including Food Politics: How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition and Health (2002); What to Eat (2006) and Safe Food: The Politics of Food Safety (2010). She has appeared in numerous documentary films, including Super Size Me (2004), Food Inc. (2008), A Place at the Table (2012)and Fed Up (2014).
