In 2010, Peter led the transition of Black Diamond from a privately held manufacturer of climbing, alpinism, and skiing equipment to a publicly traded global company that also owns POC (Sweden) and Pieps (Austria).
Foundationally Black Diamond grew out of the 1989 bankruptcy of Chouinard Equipment, and in 1991 Metcalf re-located the company from Ventura, California to Salt Lake City. Peter is known as a climber, with first ascents of difficult alpine routes in Alaska and Wyoming, and an environmentalist. In 2003, he was instrumental in organizing and leading the Outdoor Industry to challenge Utah Governor Leavitt and Secretary of the Interior Norton’s settlement on RS2477 litigation that removed protection for millions of acres of wilderness-quality lands. By redirecting the debate along economic lines versus philosophical ideals, he helped to establish a new lexicon of “jobs vs. preservation” to a “jobs vs. jobs” discussion.
Peter has been an activist leader in an array of high-profile wilderness, wild river, user group, and access issues in Utah and nationally. He has testified before Congress on three occasions on behalf of wilderness legislation, and was recently appointed as Director of the Salt Lake Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. Peter remains as actively involved in climbing, activism and business today as he has for over the last 40 years.
